The myth of “European censorship” is brandished by the Trump administration to avoid the regulation of Big Tech

“We must abolish the EU! “, “Europe allows itself to go to nothing”, “Europe censors Americans! “. Since December 5, this type of message, emanating from American Internet users, has invaded the digital space. Their trigger? The €120 million fine imposed by the European Commission on the social network X for several breaches of the Digital Services Regulation (DSA). A wise eye could easily recognize that a censorship regime would not allow the circulation of critical messages towards it, let alone call for its destruction. However, the Trump administration and Elon Musk, boss of X, accuse Europe of violating their freedom of expression.
Far from being fortuitous, these accusations are part of a growing offensive against European digital regulation, which has intensified since Donald Trump’s return to the White House. Mark Zuckerberg, for example, had claimed his willingness to collaborate with the president in order to counter European regulatory initiatives. During the summer, the Trump galaxy continued its accusations, including during a commission on “the European threat to freedom of expression and American innovation”.
